Angel and Amber Ohlinger

Patient Testimonial

Angel is my 9 years old daughter who was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta or brittle bones. She has had over 80 fractures and over eight surgeries. When I was pregnant we started seeing doctors in Taos, but eventually had to go out of town.

We were told she might not live and she might not walk. I refused to believe any of that so I did everything I could as a parent and started looking for other options, for doctors. We travelled to Omaha, Nebraska for most of her medical care. The treatment she needs is called Pamidronate. It is given by a drip (infusion) into a vein through a fine tube. We also used to go to UNM in Albuquerque for 3 days at a time. We had to stay overnight as a hospital inpatient.

From Omaha we were able to work it out, so that Dr. Villareal could receive the orders from Omaha, and we can get her treatment done here at the hospital’s infusion clinic. She’s been coming here for about 3 years. She has to go for treatment one day every 16 weeks. Her surgeries have also been here.

I heard about Holy Cross Hospital’s Infusion Clinic and decided to check it out. At first I was really hesitant because I didn’t think they would really know the medication, but soon realized they do. They do because they use similar medications for the elderly with osteoporosis. At t

he time Angel was only the second child that they were seeing.

They treat us amazing, especially Angel. They treat her like she’s royalty. It is more personalized than any of the other clinics we’ve been to and completely different from being an inpatient where you’re sitting in this awful hospital as an inpatient all day. They really pay attention to Angel and her needs. They play with her, they laugh with her.

This is something that is continual for Angel, so making the experience fun is good. Angel, for the most part, doesn’t even feel like she is there for medical treatment. She’s always super excited to go. These are women that she considers her friends. It’s pretty amazing.

The treatment normally takes a full day and we have to get blood work done the week before. They use special creams so it doesn’t hurt so bad with the IV. Angel is so brave she sits there and basically walks them through it.

Most recently the big thing was that her birthday was coming up, so Deborah Cripps, her nurse, planned a birthday party. They had made plans the visit before and it was really exciting for Angel. She made sure she had picked a gift for Deb, too.

When Angel showed up on the day of the party the room was decorated and said Happy Birthday. Someone came in and brought her flowers. The whole surgical team came with googly glasses on. They brought her balloons and sang to her. She was so excited.

It’s been a very positive experience.

"I didn’t even realize how low my energy was, after six years of having fibroids. It gradually just got worse and worse, so I just didn’t realize how bad it was until after the surgery – and how great I felt then."
